Living in Shekou

Shekou is one of Shenzhen’s easiest landing areas for foreigners.

It has more international restaurants, foreigner-friendly services, waterfront living, family infrastructure, and a softer daily-life experience than many other districts. For many first-time arrivals, that matters.

Best for

  • first-time foreign arrivals;
  • families;
  • people who value restaurants, walkability, and international services;
  • short-term stays where comfort matters;
  • people who do not need to visit factories every day.

Avoid if

  • you need daily access to Huaqiangbei, Bao’an, Longhua, or Longgang;
  • your budget is tight;
  • you want the most direct hardware market access;
  • you prefer a more local environment.

Housing style

Shekou has serviced apartments, older expat compounds, waterfront towers, family apartments, and premium rentals. Furnishing quality varies. Some older apartments are well located but need upgrades.

Commute logic

Shekou is comfortable but not always central for work. It can be excellent if your life is in western Nanshan or you value lifestyle more than supplier proximity. It can be frustrating if every meeting requires a long cross-city trip.

Hardware relevance

Low to medium. Shekou is a good living base, not a hardware base. Hardware founders should choose Shekou only if comfort, family, or short-term ease outweigh commute trade-offs.
